The Photographer
Anastasios Sakoulis was born at Athens in 1966, but he springs from the small village Hioniades, Ipirus, northwestern Greece. He studied forestry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from where he graduated in 1991. During his student years at Thessaloniki he got interested in studying wildlife and nature photography.
In 1987 he became member (for 2 years he served as General Secretary) of the Hellenic Ornithological Society (BirdLife Greece) and continues to be actively involved. He continued his studies at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, making his first acquaintance with Crete. All these years he worked for important conservation projects. But the Life project for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture ( LIFE Gypaetus) brought him back at Crete and in contact with the Natural History Museum of Crete.
Today he is living on the island, since 1999, studying and photographing its nature. Many of his photographs have been published in Greek magazines and books and in informative and educational material and posters. He has published the coffee-table book Moments of Cretan Nature and the postcard book postcard book “Naturally… Crete”. In 2008 the MYSTIS Publications published his book Amphibians, Reptiles & Mammals of Crete
