Greece's Biodiversity

Greek Nature

Greece stands out for its high biodiversity. Its main characteristic is the fine mosaic of biotopes, which varies from the semi-arid and steppic habitats of eastern Crete to the continental habitats of its northern mountains and of course the insular habitats. The diversiform Greek land hosts significantly rich fauna and flora with high endemism. Many species are very important in European and in global context and thus protected by International Conventions. Indicatively, 85 habitats, 182 animal species and 58 plant species are of European Importance.
